Phroinsias Uí Mhaonaigh (G)

This mazurka, “Phroinsias Uí Mhaonaigh” is, like all mazurkas, played something like a fast waltz.  The title translates, well transliterates really, simply as “Francie Mooney’s.”  It is the second mazurka on track 2 of the Frankie Kennedy and Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh 1982 recording Ceol Aduaidh (i.e., Northern Music), as well as on an old cassette that Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh recorded with her father Proinsias Ó Maonaigh (1922-2006), probably back in the 1970’s entitled Fiddlesticks: Irish Traditional Music from Donegal. By the way, Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh’s name is pronounced Mar-aid ne Mooney — though I’ve heard it could also be pronounced as something close to the English word “Wheely.”  Don’t count on it though.  Anyway, this tune is again the second in the same set, and is track 13 on their Fiddlesticks  cassette — which is pretty rare these days.

Chords:

Phroinsias Uí Mhaonaigh,

Phroinsias Uí Mhaonaigh,
